Delivering Results for Southeastern Massachusetts
In my time as a State Senator, I’ve fought to ensure that the men and women who keep our district, and country, safe are provided everything they need to continue their essential work. From providing line of duty benefits to securing funds that will keep Police and Fire Departments staffed, I believe that the people who put their bodies on the line to keep us safe deserve the best care and resources.

Staffing, Gear, and Personal Safety: I’ve secured more than $13 million in public safety staffing grants for the Fall River Police and Fire Departments, and appropriated a $25 million fund to help cities and towns replace expensive, toxic PFAS-containing turnout gear with safer, PFAS-free alternatives. I’ve also co-sponsored legislation to help protect firefighters and construction workers from dangers that can arise from ‘hot work’ such as welding.
Supporting the Growth of the First Responder Workforce: I have helped to adjust legislation to allow EMT/Paramedic programs to be included under Free Community College initiatives, so that more young people are afforded the opportunity to learn how to serve the district.
Line of Duty Benefits: In the Senate, I have worked to enhance state protections for law enforcement officers who have suffered major injuries due to violence in the line of duty. This work also ensures that catastrophically injured state police officers are eligible to receive disability retirement benefits equivalent to 100% of their regular pay until they reach mandatory retirement age.
Funding for Public Safety Health and Wellness: I have ensured that funds are allocated for firefighter cancer screenings, including advance blood testing and imaging, through a municipal grant program with a $250 million appropriation. This also expands funding for On-Site Academy to provide critical incident stress management and mental health support for firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and corrections officers.
Support for Military and Gold Star Families: My work in the Senate has removed an unfair penalty from Gold Star Family spouses whose loved ones fell in the line of duty, by allowing them to remarry without losing their state annuity. This work has also guaranteed a seat in the classroom for Military Children and prioritized smooth transitions for special education students who have moved due to a military parent’s work.
