Delivering Results for Southeastern Massachusetts
Every year, our digital footprints become more and more at risk of being used as a part of phishing scams, predatory marketing and advertising campaigns, and sophisticated modes of identity theft. I will continue to fight to require that tech companies keep our most sensitive data safe, and out of the hands of those who stand to manipulate it.
View the recent highlights that protect the data of constituents in the First Bristol and Plymouth district.
Returning Control to Consumers: I’ve worked to ensure that Massachusetts residents can now correct inaccurate personal data, delete personal information, and opt out of having their personal data sold to others. I’ve also fought to keep consumers informed on what personal data is being collected, how that data is being collected, and what third parties have been given access to that data.
Protecting Children Online: I have fought to ban the sale of minors’ personal data, and to ban companies from crafting advertisements that directly target children, especially on platforms like Instagram and YouTube.
Creating Opt-Out Rights for Targeted Advertisements: In the Senate, I have worked to give consumers the right to opt out of having their personal data collected or processed for the purpose of targeted advertising or for sale to third parties. I’ve also banned the sale of geolocation data for people who visit Massachusetts for any reason, including travel to the state to pursue personal health care.
Creating Strong Enforcement Powers for Digital Crimes: I have worked to grant the Office of the Attorney General broad regulatory authority to enforce any and all legislation that pertains to the misuse of sensitive data.
Banning the Sale of Sensitive Data: My work in the Senate prohibits any kind of entity from selling a person’s sensitive data such as geolocation; health care information; biometric data, such as face and fingerprint scans; citizenship or immigration status; information revealing someone’s sex life, any information about a person’s race, color, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin; and information that pertains to a child.
